The newest exhibition at the V&A Museum in London shines a spotlight on Naomi Campbell, not just as a model but as a trailblazer who has left an indelible mark on the fashion industry, gender and racial progression, and been at the center of popular culture moments that have become timeless.

The Misconception: Models as Mere Pretty Faces

Far too often, models are dismissed as individuals who simply have a glamorous yet 'easy' career. However, behind the allure of the runway and the glossy pages of magazines lies a world of creativity, influence, and impact that transcends the superficial stereotypes associated with the profession. Naomi Campbell, in particular, challenges this notion. With her background in dance, her creative contributions to friends, her business mindedness lending a hand to emerging designers this exhibition makes it obvious that she is much mor than a pretty face (as are all models) we see snippets of just how hard models work, and how strong of a personality you need to make the right connections in the fashion indsutry.

Fashion as a Catalyst for Progress

Campbell's presence in the fashion world has been instrumental in pushing boundaries and advocating for greater diversity and inclusivity. As one of the first Black models to achieve international supermodel status, she paved the way for future generations of models of color to shatter the glass ceiling and demand representation on global stages. By leveraging her platform to challenge stereotypes and champion diversity, Campbell has become a symbol of empowerment and a beacon of change in an industry that has often been criticized for its lack of inclusivity.

This was no easy feat, and to push through, with her head held high and her personality continuing to shine through, its pretty evident that she is a powerful figure in the industry. One that deserves as much credit as others who have paved the way for todays industry.

To dismiss models would be foolish whilst we idolise designers on the other side of the coin.

Pop Culture Phenomenon

Beyond her runway prowess and modeling accolades, Naomi Campbell has become a pop culture icon, synonymous with style, sophistication, and unapologetic confidence. Her influence extends beyond the fashion industry, transcending into music videos, film appearances, and high-profile friendships with renowned celebrities. Campbell's magnetic presence and larger-than-life persona have solidified her status as a cultural phenomenon, inspiring generations of individuals to embrace their uniqueness and stand tall in their convictions.

We have to share some love with the figures that make us smile, every fashion student is familliar with her fall in Vivienne Westwood heels, her sass during her trial appearance when she said to the judge "I want to get this over and done with … this is a big inconvenience for me.", and her iconic exit from community service wearing a full length sequin gown.

These demonstrations of sass, humour and personality are part of fashion history and queer culture - they are memes and they are poignant moments of a woman directing her own story. Why shouldn't she get an exhibition?

Models like Naomi Campbell serve as ambassadors of individuality, resilience, and authenticity, embodying the ethos of self-expression and diversity that resonates far beyond the confines of the fashion industry.

And - the outfits shes worn have been groundbreaking themselves, the exhibition festures some of our favorite garments from runways a red carpets alike.
